2017 Reading Challenge

Sunday, January 8, 2017

Ok, so last year I had a HUGE list of points that I had to hit with my reading challenge. I am afraid that I only made it about 66% of the way through the list. However, I DID read a much wider variety of books last year than I ever have. Going by the numbers I read and reviewed 78 books in 2016. Not too shabby if I do say so myself. I had a blast diving into new genres, reading new authors, and experiencing new settings. So overall, the reading challenge was a success, it got me out of the box and into a much broader world of books.

Top Reads of 2016 - Fiction

Thursday, January 5, 2017

I decided to do things a little different this year...I have broken down my top reads of 2016 in a way that is probably just as confusing as can be. I beg of you to just roll with it! This year has been fantabulous when it comes to books and narrowing it down made my brain hurt! I can not believe the incredible books that I have read, the authors that I have discovered, the friends that I have made through blogging/reviewing.

Today I am listing my favorite FICTION books that I read in the year 2016. Listed alphabetically by genre, author, and then by publication date - because I am weird like that.

Even though there are many books that hold a special place in my heart, there are two books that have impacted more than any of the others this year. These books have made me cry multiple times, not just while reading, but months afterwards. These books are the ones that have moved my soul in such a way that I can't get their message out of my head, the characters out of my heart. They have impacted my life in ways that I can't even begin to describe.

I fell so in love with these books that I created a new star rating in their honour. Pepper Basham and Jody Hedlund have completely blown me away this year. They have raised the bar considerably high and I can not wait to see what they bring us next.

At Your Request - An Apart From the Crowd Novella - Jen Turano

My Rating
★★★★★ - You have bewitched me, body and soul. (More Info)

About the Book
After her father lost the family fortune, Wilhelmina was cast out of the fashionable set and banished to the wallflower section. She is mortified when her friend Edgar returns to society for the first time since she rejected his proposal. Ashamed of her fall from grace, she tries to avoid him, but is there still hope for their friendship--or something more?

My Thoughts
Jen Turano continues to bring life and joy to her readers through her books. At Your Request is the introduction to a brand new series. Short and sweet, we get a little glimpse at the world we are about to enter in the first full length book Behind the Scenes which releases in April 2017.

Miss Wilhelmina Radcliff and Mr. Edgar Wanamaker provide a fun and entertaining story that sets the stage for this series. We are introduced to the people who we will be spending our time with in the future. I adore the Gilded Age and am greatly looking forward to "attending" Alva Vanderbilt's famed costume ball in the next book.

Because this is a short book, I don't want to give anything away, however, you can read this book for yourself for FREE! And can you believe this cover? Jaw droppingly beautiful! Quirky and fun, Wilhelmina and Edgar will have you cheering them on from the sidelines, or in my case probably sprawled out on the ice for my lack of coordination while skating. I have found that I think one of the main reasons I am continually enthralled by Jen's books, is that they remind me a bit of Anne of Green Gables. With elegant speech and interesting predicaments, these books never lack for humour and adventure.

I purchased At Your Request from Amazon for freeI was not required to write a review. All opinions expressed are mine alone.

Behind the Scenes
Apart From the Crowd - Book 1
Miss Permilia Griswold may have been given the opportunity of a debut into New York high society, but no one warned her she wasn't guaranteed to "take." After spending the last six years banished to the wallflower section of the ballroom, she's finally putting her status on the fringes of society to good use by penning anonymous society gossip columns under the pseudonym "Miss Quill."

Mr. Asher Rutherford has managed to maintain his status as a reputable gentleman of society despite opening his own department store. While pretending it's simply a lark to fill his time, he has quite legitimate reasons for needing to make his store the most successful in the country.
When Permilia overhears a threat against the estimable Mr. Rutherford, she's determined to find and warn the man. Disgruntled at a first meeting that goes quite poorly and results in Asher not believing her, she decides to take matters into her own hands, never realizing she'll end up at risk as well.

As Asher and Permilia are forced to work together and spend time away from the spotlight of society, perhaps there's more going on behind the scenes than they ever could have anticipated. . . .
