Top Ten Tuesday - Fathers in Fiction - Movie Edition

Monday, June 12, 2017

This week the The Broke and the Bookish gave us a Father's Day Freebie for Top Ten Tuesday. I decided to do my favorite fathers (or father figures) on the screen. MOST of these shows are based on books. So here you have....in no particular order....My Top Ten Dads in Fiction!

Mr. Bennett
from Pride and Prejudice
TU53.7 "Why, thank you, my dear," Mr Bennet said, placing it on a pile of books he intended to borrow from his son-in-law. "And did you find it useful?" This pic - Benjamin Whitrow as Mr. Bennet, Pride and Prejudice.:

Can we just give Mr. Bennett a round of applause? FIVE daughters...a wife whose nerves are well...dramatic to say the least. And yet he maintains a calm and collective manner at all times. What a guy!

Arthur Weasley
from Harry Potter
Molly and Arthur, Bill, Charlie, Percy, Fred/George? George/Fred? Ron and Ginny:

The Weasley family is one of my FAVORITES of all time! And Arthur, with all his oddities and obsession with muggles...holds the family together. Through the good times and the bad, he is a pillar of strength for the family. (I know the photo is dark, but was the only good one I could find of all the kids)

Captain Crewe
from A Little Princess
My daddy used to call me His Little Princess :) RIP papa.. 16 years later and I am still missing you:

Depending on the version you watch will determine the outcome of this story for you. But there is no denying the special bond that exists between the Captain and Sarah. He is a gentle and sweet father and truly believes he is doing the best thing for Sarah when he leaves her at Ms. Minchin's boarding school.

Matthew Cuthbert
from Anne of Green Gables
matthew cuthbert | Well, you're our girl now." - Matthew Cuthbert:

Puffed sleeves...Need I say more? Matthew and his gentle spirit and generous heart makes him the perfect father figure for Anne. I just adore him.

Captain Von Trapp
from The Sound of Music
The Sound of Music:

Yes, I realise that the Von Trapp family is not fiction...But The Sound of Music is definitely dramatized. SO, I don't feel bad including him. And although he seems hard on the outside, he has a soft center.

Lord Grantham
from Downton Abbey
Downton Abbey quotes:

Here is the one that isn't based on an actual book...But how could I NOT include Lord Grantham? He may not be the "perfect" father, but his heart is in the right spot and he loves his family.

Maurice
from Beauty and the Beast

Maurice and Belle:

My favorite Maurie quote..."My daughter...ODD?" A gentle father who will protect his daughter at any cost. I wonder where Belle inherited the selfless heart she has. I ADORE Kevin Kline's portrayal in the new Beauty and the Beast. "How does a moment last forever? How can a story never die? It is love we must hold on to. Never easy, but we try." And even when the whole town thought he was crazy, he never gave up on searching for Belle.

Mr. Banks
from Mary Poppins

Oh man...Here is one for ya! I never truly understood Mr. Banks until I saw "Saving Mr. Banks" OH MY GOODNESS!!! Get ready for the waterworks...I love the transformation that we see throughout Mary Poppins.

Professor Henry Jones Sr.
from Indiana Jones
Harrison Ford & Sean Connery in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. How can you beat this duo?:
Pinterest

These two...My childhood would not have been complete without them. Henry and Indiana (or rather, Junior) make a great team...once they put their mind to it.

Bilbo Baggins
from The Hobbit/The Lord of the Rings
"Bilbo once told me his part in this tale would end… that each of us must come and go in the telling. Bilbo's story was now over. There would be no more journeys for him… save one.":
Pinterest

Oh Bilbo! What a hobbit...And such a critical role that he played in Frodo's life. I love the bond they share. The adventurer, the story teller, the father figure Frodo needed. *sigh*

  1. We have a couple of dads in common this week! I could not agree with you more, Mr. Bennet has nerves of steel to be able to cope with Mrs. Bennet. Great list!

  3. Awww! So many I forgot to add. I thought of Matthew early on but then, in my haste to put mine together (what is it with me and those last-minute dashes!? *smile*) I forgot him. Love Lord Grantham and also, A Little Princess was another I intended to add.

Ah, well! This just means I can do a kind of "part two" of favorites in the future. :)

    Great list, Rachel.

  5. I loved Kevin Kline's take on Maurice. I loved the depth that they added to his backstory, it added a lot to their relationship and why he acts the way he does.
